NOTES

Spring Bites Are On: Redfish, Trout & Flounder Heating Up in Rio Hondo

Arroyo Colorado - Cameron, TX

Fishing conditions in Rio Hondo, Texas are heating up as spring rolls in, bringing warmer water temps and more active fish in both the Laguna Madre and Arroyo Colorado. Anglers have been reporting steady action across a variety of species, especially during early morning and late afternoon bites.

Inshore Action Speckled trout are biting well on live shrimp under popping corks and soft plastics near grass flats and drop-offs. The redfish bite has picked up in shallow back bays and marshy areas, with several slot-size reds caught on cut mullet and Gulp baits. Flounder are starting to show up along sandy bottoms and channel edges, especially on moving tides—chartreuse and white paddle tails are working best.

Backwater & Channel Fishing In the Arroyo Colorado, black drum and sheepshead are plentiful near pilings and bridge structures. Fiddler crabs and shrimp have been the top baits. Freshwater runoff has slightly affected clarity, but it hasn't stopped the bite—just be patient and fish deeper pockets. Some reports of snook and mangrove snapper are coming in from the warmer backwater spots, especially on calm days.

With mild weather, improving tides, and longer daylight hours, it's a great time to plan your fishing trip to Rio Hondo. The action is consistent, the fish are hungry, and the spring patterns are officially in motion.
